You barely hear her. You've known her to be a strong-willed, prideful lizardwoman since the day you've met her. She wasn't infallible by any means, but you've always assumed that strength of hers to be present. Seeing her fidget so, unable to meet your eyes is a rare sight. She is cute and beautiful in her wedding dress; your heart beats like a hammer in your ears.
And that's what makes everything so hard to bear.
You put on a smile. It is like lacing your cheeks with sharp glass. "You look fantastic," you say. "He'll be speechless."
He. Not you.
A part of you is glad for her - of all people, she deserves to happy. But the other part of you wishes you were to make her smile.

It is, you tell her. You tell her that she's skipping a few steps though, like engagement. But, you tell her you'd love to get married and grow old together.
She blushes and stammers, "W-w-what? Engagement? Grow old together!?"
Yeah, you say. Your heart is sinking, but you keep smiling. That's what the wedding dress means, you say. She never said she'd never want to marry you.
She grips the gown. She's biting her lip and won't meet your eyes. You tell her that you're not insulted that she doesn't want to take things that far yet.
"I'll....I'll do it." She whispers. Her eyes meet yours.
"Humans only live for a couple of decades, right?"
