At the very least, Lucatiel knows what game shes in. Dark Souls is kind of supposed to be dreary and grim, so to have her story be a bit sad suits the tone. Beats the hell out of the same "I'm gonna move to Majula and never have to worry about hollowing after one conversation" bit seven times.

My only complaint about this game is that Lucatiel is the only character I felt at least the smallest emotion for. 90% of the characters in DkS1 I felt either sympathy, elation, empathy, etc when I saw them and understood their stories, even the major enemies in the game.
Benhart is little more than a wandering swordsman who has a sword fetish, Creighton is a psychopath, Pate is a scumbag, Cale is near useless, Shalquoir is creepy, Mcduff is insane, Chloanne is just a pair of tits, Lenigrast is an asshole who cares about little more than Chloanne, I can't even remember the rest of the cast. Even the Emerald Herald is nothing but a glorified plot device, literally made to push the player forward. Lucatiel was the only one I felt my character could relate to, a visual representation of what the curse does on a personal level. Losing everything that makes an individual an individual, and actually admitting that it frightens the hell out of her.
Sorry to anyone annoyed by walls of text, I just really needed to vent.
