At Midway, Kaga, Soryu and Akagi were all sunk the first day of the battle by American dive bombers after they focused all their defensive efforts on lower-flying torpedo bombers. Hiryu broke away from the main group and was the only carrier to survive the initial assault, launching a counter-attack that fatally damaged the American carrier Yorktown, which was finished off by the submarine I-169. By the second day, however, Hiryu had been tracked down, and was also sunk by American dive bombers, wiping out more than half the total Japanese carrier force.
