Lanterns are a symbol of Obon in the summer. A candle, incense, food and drink are placed on a tray near the family alter in remembrance of one's ancestors. A lantern is kept lit to symbolically guide the souls of loved ones to the home. On the last evening of Obon, lanterns again guide the spirits back to their resting places.
