Oda is so badass that he could pull a backstory for a character thats probably a one-time deal right out his ass and still made it more deep than most backstory in ANY manga.

One of the biggest badasses ever. No fruit powers, no Haki (not explicitly manifested, at least), lost a leg because he cut it voluntarily... Yet so strong he'd probably own most of the enemies seen so far in the series. After all he went through (including seeing what his wish to be forgotten for his past sins really meant), he deserved his happy ending.
