It wasn't a hallucination, you should read what the writers said when they explained the situation. In short to prevent the harem collapsing from jealousy they wanted to believe what happened was just an effect from the stuff on that island; but it wasn't.

They wanted to solidify the relationship between him and Saeko in a roundabout way that would let people argue it to support their own ships with him. But canonly? Him and Saeko are a thing.
