Hobbes, the tiger, is a stuffed animal given to Calvin by his father. Due to the very imaginative person that he is, Calvin imposed a persona on the doll to make a playmate, either due to anti-social behavioral problems, mental deficiencies, trauma or maybe other reasons (never given enough context to pin down the reason).
Effectively Hobbes is an imaginary friend to Calvin.

TLC - By Watterson's own admission, he never implied he was solely Calvin's imaginary friend, or was a real creature. He left the idea ambiguous to help with his stories, hence why you would sometimes see Hobbes doing things an imaginary friend could not do.
You're approaching it from a shrink's perspective. Try reading what the creator had in mind first before making such assumptions.
