Most don't realize it, but the M14 was originally designed and built as a full-auto. It was intended to be used something like the BAR, as a support weapon, squad automatic weapon, or LMG, whatever.
Weak ass mofos decided it was too much to handle, so the armorers and the manufacturer got rid of the full-auto capability, basically by just swapping some part to set them to semi-auto and get rid of the selector switch. Some M14s will still have the original stock, with a unique cut where the selector switch originally was, supposedly...
With the rise of the MK14 EBR, full-auto capability was restored to the M14 platform, possibly by just refitting the original parts alongside some new ones.
The Brits had the same problem with the FAL---another heavy rifle originally designed as a full-auto-capable but modified and adopted as a semi-auto-only, whilst some other folks just went ahead and used the full-auto model.
