Sad really, if you think about it. If you let 'it' happen, he becomes taken over by it and you have to kill him.
If you don't let him find his 'sun', he becomes depressed.

That's why if he dies in one of my games I put on Solaire's armor if I light the final bonfire, so that the Sunbro will become grossly incandescent at last.

Wasn't it confirmed by the From though that if you deny him his 'sun' and he survives the final battle, he returns to his own world and kindles the First Flame? If that's true then he technically becomes his own sun.
