Only few people watch those 1080 anyway. Most just do not have displays big enough to watch 1080.
720p is optimal.

plus stuff like this is usually done not long after it's shown
in most cases, till the BDs are ripped, there is no 1080p source. before those sources are available, anything labeled 1080p is going to be upscaled from the (720p in most cases) tv or web rips
