I don't know, it never seemed to me that Hinata is all that fleshed out character like Sakura, I used to like her until I grew tired of her 1D personality.
Being a shy, gentle, and supportive girl with large breasts and a perfect body doesn't make a good character, you have such girls everywhere.
As for Sakura, at least she had realistic personality of a girl her age, but people hate her for being obsessed with Sasuke (like Naruto wasn't obsessed with him as well, and Hinata with Naruto) and friendzoning Naruto, or for being a bitch.
Personally, she only felt like bitch to me at the beginning when she talked about Naruto and his bad behaviour even though she didn't understood him, but afterwards, with all her bad sides, she grew up as quite a person, and if we'll be honest, far more supportive than Hinata.
You could love her or hate her, but fact is, Sakura is one of few females in Naruto that was actually fleshed out.
IMO, Hinata had a huge potential (as well as others like Shino, or Tenten) to be an amazing character, what will all the Hyuga backstory which was also abandoned, but like this, she really ended up only being a favorite of most people for being a shy, gentle, and supportive girl with large breasts and a perfect body whose sentences are pretty much all Naruto.
She is basically another Karin, although Karin is at least funny.
Btw, Sakura looks quite good as well, IMO.

Now that I think about it, there were so many characters with potential, Anko, or Genma for instance - they both seemed rather cool.
Konan as well, too bad they never shown her actual relationship with Jiraiya.
At least, fillers helped flesh out some of them...

Yes, he held her hand after Neji's death, but there wasn't anything that seemed like romance to me (altough fanartists have gone crazy about it)...
Still, it was obvious that they will end up together, I guess because of what seemed like Hinata's one-sided love in series, and that Sakura will end up with Sasuke.
Still, as for amount of showed interactions, most logical end would be Naruto x Sasuke, and I'm not kidding (okay, I am, but you get what I'm trying to say).
I don't remember Naruto having anyone on his mind so much during series as Sasuke.

Kishimoto never pointed anything.
It was never shown that Naruto sees Hinata as anything other than friend up until the last chapter where they have kids.
