Chief NEVER had a wife because he had been a soldier since he was SIX. Now he's forty-something. Cortana is explicitly stated to have been an AI derived from the brain of Dr. Catherine Hasley, (dunno about last name spelling) who is easily old enough to be the Chief's MOTHER. In fact, that's what the designer of the SPARTAN program considers herself: the mother of the Spartans.
