the kaio-ken was the liveration of ki under great pressure, they didn't remove it in the next saga, they just changed the color from red to yellow...

My favorite dbz movie, having deftones play as goku did his transformation, then the comeback... badass. This movie did everything right, and had the good sense to stick with the action, short and sweet.

I wouldn't exactly say Kaio-ken became irrelevent, he used it in the Frieza arc right up until he became a Super Saiya-jin, which in turn made the Kaio-ken technique redundant during the fight with Frieza.

He did use a varition as a Super Saiya-jin, aptly named, "Super Kaio-ken" when fighting Pikkon in the Other World Tournament, but that's only filler and can only be considered canon in the anime.
