I love that probably THE prominent face of this game is both black and a girl. I love even more that Nintendo/Monolith Soft isn't making a big deal about it. It's like what Brian Konitzsko (sp?) and Micheal Dante DiMartino did for Avatar with Korra, they let their choice speak for itself and didn't evangelize themselves or their character. Which is to say that it effectively doesn't matter that she's black. It's like the color of her skin was chosen as arbitrarily as the color of her outfit*, and that makes me really happy.
*Obviously character design and color scheming are painstakingly tested and prototyped in and out, but you get my meaning yeah?

Korra was much the same way and in her case it was because the cycle of Avatars is Air, Water, Earth and then Fire. Korra just happened to be from the Water Tribe.
Also, supposedly, the theorized idea of what humans will look like in the future after many years of mixing different races together is supposedly a somewhat dark skinned person much like what Elma looks like.

Even "ambiguously brown" (I was going to type that but decided against it) is ok with me, I and many others will still identify them as "black" first and foremost. As a black person, that's great for me, but as an "ambiguously brown" person she can appeal to an even wider demo and that's probably better.
I didn't know about that theory, except from South Park, lol. Makes sense though, darker skin tones seem like they're usually dominant genes, even just through casual observation.
