Ah Broly... Following the trend since you first appeared. Never a Trend setter.

Nigga, did you forget that Legendary Super Saiyan - the form no-one else has - set the trend? Hell, they even gave the guy Legendary Super Saiyan 3, with its own unique traits? Try harder.

Broly is best DBZ villain, and this is just another way of showing it. The guy shows up EVERYWHERE.

Broly is a terrible villain. He's one note, the only interesting thing about him is his Legendary Super Saiyan transformation and even that gets beaten easily by a simple punch and a combined Kamehameha wave.

^
It's not so much the punch but where exactly he was punched.
It was right where he was stabbed as a baby.

Never forget when the Legendary Super Saiyan Broly had trouble handling two half-Saiyan babies, and was even peed on by one of them. Truly the most intimidating DBZ villain.

The first time he was intimidating sure, but the 2nd time he was already vastly outclassed even after his 7-year Zenkai,.
The only reason there was any trouble with him the 2nd time was because Goku was dead and Vegeta didn't give two shits. He obviously had to have felt Broly's power, but didn't go, which means he knew he wasn't a threat and left it to Gohan and the kids.

Proof? Ok.

1) SSJ2 Gohan was actually able to hurt Broly with some of his attacks, and that was Gohan after becoming much weaker due to not training for 7 years.

2) Then, during the Bio-Broly movie, they stated many villians (including the original Broly) had escaped Hell and were causing havoc, but Goku went and defeated them ALL easily.

3) And finally, during the Janemba movie (which happens after all the Broly movies), Goku flat out said that Janemba was the only opponent, aside from Majin Buu, to ever force him to use the SSJ3. Which means Goku defeated Broly with the SSJ2.

Conclussion: Even after his bigass Zenkai, LSSJ Broly was only stronger than weakened SSJ2 Gohan (but not by so much, since Gohan's attacks actually hurt him, unlike the 1st movie), but weaker than both SSJ2 Vegeta and SSJ2 Goku (since they actually kept up with their training and had far surpassed Gohan after the 7-year timeskip).

If Goku had been alive and/or if Vegeta gave a fuck, he would've been defeated pretty easily the 2nd time. Broly is one of the most overrated villians in DBZ, people only like him cause he's also a Saiyan but most are pretty delusional about his actually power compared to the main characters.

Oh, and SSJ3/SSJ4 Broly are non-canon.

Well, Broly sure has been badly handled after 1st movie, but let's see the potential he could have had with a different writing, basing on what we know of him.

First of, he has a unique transformation line, which means whatever regular transformations he will learn (which limits itself to SSJ, so far) he will always be able to trump them with LSSJ, adapting it.

Second, he, even more so than regular sayians, has an unlimited power potential. The key word here is "potential" : if we look at him at a given moment, his power has its limits, just like any sayian. And that's why he was not so impressive starting 2nd movie : even a zenkai is not as strong a power up than regular training, as Goku and Vegeta demonstrated during the Namek saga (Vegeta using zenkais, goku actual training). So yeah, being still stuck with SSJ as base for his LSSJ and having never trained sure caused him to get caught up by the heroes over time.

Lastly he may have survived his 1st movie encounter physically, but not mentally. In 1st movie, he could count on his overwhelming power but he still was capable of thinking, and even cunning to some degree (anticipating his father's betrayal and escape, and ambushing the heroes using landscape). In the 2nd movie ? He was just an angry baby incapable of making syntaxically correct sentences and bashing everything on sight, making him an easy target for Gohan's cunning with the nearby volcano (though his shielding reflexes served him well)

All in all, Broly with his full mental sate restored and using actual training to power up would probably crush even the likes of Golden Freeza and Beerus. Though we do agree that such a thing is unlikely to ever happen at this point...

What would be interesting too would be to have Broly restored but also learning in the process that hiw ways were wrong. Dragonball has missed many opportunities for a hero walking the path of redemption instead of the classic path of righteousness (er... not sure how that one is spelled xD). Tien Shin Han & Chaozu, Piccolo, Vegeta, Fat Buu... All these started of as cruel villains (with varying degrees) and switched to hero side, yet none remained actually remorseful of their darker past. that's a waste of storytelling potential here, and having a good Broly shameful of his past destructions and craving for making amends would have been an interesting change in the franchise. ;)
