if they did that background by hand, then ... holy crap that's amazing. However, I'm guessing they just took a picture and ran it through an art filter on photoshop. However, it still looks very good. So few artists spend time on really detailed backgrounds these days.

It's clear that deliberate, non-automated brush strokes are used. It may be a trace of a photo but nothing wrong with that.
