It was a bad Christmas. Mrs Claus was complaining about a headache, half the reindeer were sick with explosive flatulance, and the the elves were complaining about pay.
Santa was taking aspirin to reduce the headache, so perhaps the angel knocked at the wrong time.
"Excuse me Mr Claus, where should I put this Christmas tree?"
And that is why the angel is placed on top of the Christmas tree.
