its probably because the Potato was because they were in semi-undeveloped status in the original. as they were all farmers, eating a raw potato was pretty believable, since its what would be readily available. so, since its a junior high setting, a rice ball would be the natural equivalent to a potato; in ease of acquisition, and desired snack food.

yeah that was basically my point, it was easy to obtain, and didnt need cooking, so she naturally nommed on the potato. which is basically what the rice ball is in this universe.
