Why not? Swords can cut stuff, and a sword is stronger if the person wielding it is stronger, and, well you know, DBZ characters are very strong. I remember Goku stopping the sword attacks of Trunks without breaking a sweat, like playing, but i still think that in the right hands, a sword can be epic and basass as f#ck in the DB/Z universe and can do some serious damage. Also, didn't Goku like block those sword attacks with his finger on the sides of the sword and not on the sharp edge? What i am trying to say is, although characters like Goku, Vegeta and so on are insanely strong, they can be cut, i have no doubt about that. Meh, i'm biased 'cause i love swords in movies or anime xD.

Vegetto used a sword made of ki against Super Buu, so it's not like he needs physical objects.

Android 18 blocked and destroyed Trunk's sword with her arm. Goku blocked it with his finger (using ki). Trunks caught his own sword when Cold was trying to cut him down. Though true that cutting techniques with ki have never failed in canon (probably also true for piercing), actual 'swords' and such have failed plenty.
