Actually, Avance is a female name, meaning "sword maiden" and "guardian bride". It also translates to "ocean's maid". It's not a name that's ever been used as a unisexual name, or for boys. How so many translations claim Avance is a male monster, is actually really confusing. The very design, is of an androgynous female.
The kanji, romanji and katakana for the tale behind Avance, are slightly different, the romanji implies that Avance is androgynous, while the kanji and katakana, which most translations are based from, claim Avance is female. All translations however make it clear, that Avance is the beloved of Emilia. Aside from that, officially Avance's sex is still in question, but leaning very heavily towards female, recently, due to the official kanji used to translate newer sets and their lore.

I hate to break it tou you Anon4, but that's never officially stated anywhere, in or out of anything. That's just what people assume. But if you really think that, that's on you. Everyone assumes Avance is male, because of one translation and their inability to difference a young female face and hips, from a young male. Avance is female outside of the translation most seem to follow. Great Sorcerer Nekroz is not confirmed to be anyone specific. Young men also don't have Avance's haircut. That's a style that young women have, as a practice in training for both marriage and military.

The Nekroz clan arose from the remnants of the Gusto and Naturia, not the Gishki. That was a translation error, that Duel Terminal didn't correct, for unknown reasons. Great Sorcerer of the Nekroz, is actually Kamui of the Gusto clan, and NOT Avance. Emilia was arranged to marry Avance, but married Kamui in the end. Kamui, bore similar raiments to the original Gusto clan, which were the precursors to the original Gishki clan.

Actually, Nekroz IS a clan formed by Avance and Emilia. They are the advancement of the Gishki since they have perfected the art of Rituals with their mirrors. Also, Great Sorcerer of the Nekroz also has Avance's sword in his artwork, as well as having the same stats (ATK, DEF, Level, Attribute, and Type).
Avance is also very much male. Going by the Gishki archetype's structure, the female Gishki non-Ritual / non-Extra Deck monsters are all spirits and Avance does not follow this trend.
The issue with his name may just be an error on the dev's part or if it was intentional, they probably did so due to Avance LOOKING feminine, not actually being female.
Also pretty sure the feelings between Avance and Emilia is mutual considering what they went through (see Aquamirror Cycle, Spell Wall, Sacred Serpent's Wake).
Kamui got together with Reeze and had Pilica as their daughter. If anything, Ritual Beasts are the advancement of Gusto like Nekroz with Gishki. Kamui is also Ritual Beast Tamer Elder since they both share the same scarf as well as stats, the same case with Avance and Great Sorcerer. Naturia just have a close bond with the Gusto and consequently the Ritual Beasts.

One married and the Nekroz clan was created. The other, the female, did not marry and is the Avance seen most prominently featured in most TCG art that came about after the Nekroz line. The truth, is that no one here has the need to tell anyone they are incorrect, or say they are correct themselves, as there is not one character named Avance, but two.
