There seems to be a bit of a monopoly in the Leaf Village when it comes to Hokages.
First the 1st Hokage and the 2nd are blood related brothers. Then the 3rd Hokage was the student of the 2nd Hokage. The 4th Hokage is alittle fair because he wasn't directly below the 3rd Hokage, but when you consider the fact that the 4th Hokage was the 3rd Hokages students student then it kind of falls back into the monopoly. Then the 5th Hokage is the 3rds student, then the 6th Hakage is the student of the 4th Hokage, and lastly the 7th Hokage is the student of the 6th Hokage.
This relation that these characters have with each other seem to more or less dictate who will become Hokage or not. Seems less of a vote and more of a royalty.

KhightMare, in first place we talk about organization that was formed by gathering various ninja clans ones with strongest support of clans get's his candidature send to Daimyo of fire country... besides all nations in Naruto world are monarchical regimes, why the hell do you expect democracy to pop out suddenly in equivalent of half-autonomous military nation? Calling autocracy rather than monarchy would be more fitting though... with mix of meritocracy.

KhightMare, in first place we talk about organization that was formed by gathering various ninja clans ones with strongest support of clans get's his candidature send to Daimyo of fire country... besides all nations in Naruto world are monarchical regimes, why the hell do you expect democracy to pop out suddenly in equivalent of half-autonomous military nation? Calling autocracy rather than monarchy would be more fitting though... with mix of meritocracy.

But still, if we must link them then let's do it completly. As other anon above me stated, 5th is also grandaughter to 1st. Then, you have7th who on top of being student of 6th is also son of 4th and, as it was well known at the time, reincarnation of 1st.
But the most promising hokage candidate so far in the next generation is probably Sarada, so there you have it, KnightMare : the monopoly is about to get broken. :p
