This is actually true to Peanuts canon: a long-running joke in the strips is that Charlie Brown inevitably produces huge messes whenever he tries to write with a pen and ink, which is why he has a "pencil pal" instead of a pen pal. See for example the April 25, 1967 strip among many others.
