Actually the proper term is "emasculation". In Europe this was a method of pre-execution torture in the Middle Ages typically reserved to traitors. On the other hand in the Ottoman Empire eunuchs were emasculated, as opposed to other Asian cultures that had eunuchs but they were "only" castrated. Removal of the penis in pre-pubescent eunuchs is really unnecessary, painful and dangerous.

So if this boy were "only castrated" as you put it, he would be showing us a pre-pubescent boy's winkle, 1½ inches at the most, and a fold of skin from which the testicles had been removed. He would not be able to get erections or to ejaculate.
