seriously, they do the right side too often in anime. It looks like her tail buds off the 3rd lumbar vertebra, resulting in a split spinal column.

Please realize the Coccyx our vestigial tail.

Well, since tails are continuing the actual spinal column, the right side is actually more realistic than the left side, which is more likely the result of a butt plug... :-°

Still, you're right, something's off on the right side with the way her tail connects to her back.

i think the most realistic position (as far as something like a cat tail on an anime girl can be called "realistic") would be somewhere in-between these two examples, which is probably what the artist intended to show. one's clearly taped on, one's clearly a plug, and although that 2nd variety certainly has its own charm, an actual tail would join their bodies roughly at the upper edge of their panties.
