Actually that's the Japanese version of what we called the NES is known as the Famicom in Japan.

Not only that, but was that system out during the timeframe of the series though?

Nope, unfortunately for them, the Famicon came out July 15th, 1983... so... the story takes just one month beforehand... damn. For Rika to be stuck in June of 1983 for... lord knows how long... JUST before the Famicom came out... no wonder Bernkastel's a bitch. o_o;
