@Anon1 : it was implied, though not explicitly (instead, through emotions), that he refused it because he felt remorseful for his past actions. That was the beginning oof his journey of redemption. As a personnal interpretation, it may not be just a means of atonement like Anon2 said (though it certainly still is), but also serves as a reminder for life of his former twisted path, so he shall never walk it again. Dark, yes, but not evil.
@Anon3 : well he does not need to always have all of them, does he ? those escrima sticks are actually shaped goudamas. ;)
