You'll get used to the downvote thing - you always have a vote you can use to unhide your comments if you just get one negative hit. People downvote things for all sorts of reasons, so it's a good idea to not take it personally.
You can set it up so no comments are hidden for you if you prefer it that way. You don't need to make an account for this to work. Go to My Account, Options, put something like -999 in the Comment Threshold box, and save the settings. As long as you don't clear your cookies, that'll make all comments automatically visible for you regardless of their score.
