If you think this was bad, at least ember, while not super effective, could hit onix's weaker special defense. Playing pokemon yellow, pikachu was utterly useless in this fight. Onix is immune to thundershock and quick attack did ball's damage to it.

On the plus side, Yellow also tweaked movesets and Pokemon locations, so you could catch a Mankey on Route 22 before tackling Viridian Forest, which would learn a super-effective Fighting type attack at level 9.

As for ember, a trained enough charmender could bring havoc to the more physical+defensive Onix in this fight using Ember, even without burning. However, the real problem back then was his bide move. You had to pay attention and stick to status moves until you knew Onix would launch his bide move final stage before your actual turn, so that you could switch to Ember. Otherwise, you'd expose yourself to serious damage from Bide...

I remember playing Pokemon Yellow and I managed to beat Brock with what has got to be hilarious as hell. I beat Onix with a Metapod when it knew only one move Harden. I beat it with Struggle, before the game made it hurt the user.
