The Swordfish WAS obsolete, it just happened to fight an enemy completely unequipped for the type of threat it presented. Bismarck was done in by the complete lack of air support in the Kriegsmarine, just as the Pearl Harbor battleships would be a few months later. Compare the Swordfish, which saw no significant air opposition throughout the entire war because German and Italy had no operational carriers, to the American torpedo bombers that were routinely slaughtered before 1943 because they had to go against Zeroes while trying to make their runs.
No matter how good you think your flak is, and no matter how old the enemy's planes are, you can't fight planes without planes.
