@2000041 and others.

I'm very sorry that my earlier comment caused everyone to think I saw pokemon through a solely pragmatic lens.

Obviously it's an extension of the orchid mantis, except instead of being an arthropod imitating a plant or fungi, the plant is camouflaged as an insect. I didn't know what animal it was based off of before you all said, so thanks in that regard. I don't understand why someone would throw up the Meowth being a "cat type" debate though (that old famous one), if meowth were a "cat type", than Lurantis, or Scyther etc. would neex to be "mantid type", not bug.

No, Scyther, don't do it! She'll eat you! Then kill you!

geez, well as for me I hope Lurantis doesn't eat their mates, (it would make hard for them when it comes to dating sites) and second I think you guys/girls should stop this tomato/tomahto thing over Lurantis.

As other anons have said, Fomantis and Lurantis aren't orchid mantises... rather they're mantis orchids.

Just going to say this, but the habit of the female mantis eating her mate's head isn't that common. Sure it does happen, but its been over exaggerated by those who study these insects.

Though females raised in captivity are more likely to commit such an act, but what causes this is anyone's guess. Some breeds of Mantid never eat their mate.

Fuel for the fire:
The entire Trapinch line also isn't bug type, despite the fact that Trapinch is *clearly* based on an antlion (they're just ground, and then ground/dragon). Sometimes pokemon just don't get all the typings that make sense for them.
