Lurantis's pre-evolution is called Fomantis (Faux mantis).

It's not an actual mantis, it's a plant that looks like one.

lurantis is an orchid mantis, a mantis thats made to imitate a plant, hence the grass type.

It's a reverse concept of a Orchid Mantis. It's a Flower imitating a Mantis, hence it's pre-evo's name "Fomantis", literately meaning false Mantis.

Bulbasaur is a grass type too, that doesn't make it a plant.

The "Faux" in Fomantis could just as easily be a reference to its camouflage.

This whole name debate could be traced back to Sudowoodo (pseudo = false, so false wood). It's a rock type trying to pass for a grass type.
