Maybe it's due to the fact that Male link is made of pure sex, and many males would go gay for link because of the sheer amount of overpowering man crushes they have on him? Thus, making Link female allows everything to be "Okay" and they don't have to question their sexuality because the plug-in suddenly became an outlet?

Lets face it, I think there are plenty out there that would bone link, male OR female. They're Link-sexual
