The reference is centuries older then that. It's from the Japanese tale of the wood-cutter. He accidentally dropped an ax into a lake and the spirit of the lake asked if he had dropped a silver ax or a golden ax. He told the truth and said neither. For his honesty the spirit gave him his ax back plus the other two.
