I like dumb stuff like this too, if the show itself didn't try to take itself so seriously. I mean it obviously doesn't, but the way it's made, looking at first episode, isn't really that much fun because it's made to look serious and they're already trying to cram in some drama like the father thing etc. there when it just doesn't need any of that. Why can't they just have fun with this concept?

@Anon1 It's better off like this imo. In the world, it's a legitimate sport and the manga takes itself relatively seriously so it's best if the anime follows suit. I personally don't see the problem with it but more than that I feel the serious-sports-anime tone creates a nice gap-moe-like charm when contrasted the ridiculous seeming concept. I couldn't think of a better way to execute it myself.
