I'm not caught up with Dragon ball super or anything so forgive my ignorance but aren't the power levels of the characters so large that a kamehameha should destroy that planet?

Good, logical writing
Dragon Ball Super

You have to pick one, you can't have both.

That has been true since the cell saga.

To be fair, you'd have to be asking that since midway through Z.

Even earlier. Vegeta apparently had enough power to destroy the planet with a Galick Gun when he arrived on Earth.

Ki control remember. That's why Trunks got concerned when Goten was trying to use the Kamehamaha because he couldn't control his blast and ended up destroying the tournament.

The problem with the "fan theory" of Ki control is that if the beings are nearly as strong as they are being presented then the amount of energy put into a blast should still be way above anything they can control, and way above Earths durability.

Remember Goku told Gohan not to hold anything back during his blast struggle with Cell and the planet was still perfectly ok. And that was 5 seasons ago.

As Anon2 so perfectly said. Logical writing, DBS; pick one.

Roshi could blow up the moon and that was all the way back in Dragon Ball so characters that can blow up heavenly bodies or planets even from what takes months to travel to in just a moment are pretty much common at this point. Just don't think about it.

@#2049591
Part of Whis' training was teaching Goku and Vegeta to better control their ki by not letting energy leak out all over the place.

^ Yes but that was referring to their own bodies. Not their Ki blast. They can't control how destructive their blast will be, only how much energy goes into it.
That's why aiming towards the planet is always a big issue.
