IIRC, this sequence was made by a guest animator.
OLM was switching to a new animation program and techniques during this time, so there were lots of scenes in XY&Z where they were experimenting with them.

Sun&Moon uses a lot 3D as well. But they tone down the detail on the people so the animation won't be expensive af. This is the last time we have both good animation and detailed person.

Great so Pokemon is going down the same road as staw wars. No thanks I'll stick with 2D, at least then the pokemon will not looked deformed as with in S/M.
