No, Hau and Illima aren't in the anime. Hala oversaw Ash's battle against Totem Gumshoos (and Totem Gumshoos gave him the Normalium Z).

Trial Captains aren't a thing in the anime, just Totem Pokemon and Kahunas.

Couldn't the anime be a sorta loosely adapted prequel to the story of the game? Lillie has yet to steal Nebby and has to overcome fear of Pokemon. Captains from the game are yet to become captains. Hau is staying more with his parents and less with Hala, maybe his dad didn't leave yet. And so on...

I'd agree with that theory. It might also explain all the personality differences between some of the characters. They have yet to grow into their in-game molds.
