From what I can gather, this more exaggerated comedic approach is largely down to Yokai Watch. Which is something of a competitor with the franchise in Japan at the moment.

Competitor? Youkai Watch had straight up beaten the XY and XYZ seasons (with relative ease), which were pretty unpopular in Japan.
