Wtf are they even doing? I swear just when you think Sun & Moon can't get any less like Pokemon, they pull this bullcrap. Do the animators not realize that Pokemon is about having an adventure? Ash has been on the same damn island for the past 30 episodes. He's enrolled in a Pokemon school even though he's already an accomplished trainer. All of a sudden he's as hyperactive as Woody Woodpecker on sugar pills. All the characters are just screwing around, and did I mention that Ash is still staying in one place and not traveling like he's supposed to?

Yeah, but think about it. Ash is already an experienced trainer. What does he even need the school for? He hasn't been traveling like he always does, and thus there's very little adventure. Even Team Rocket noted that Ash isn't the studying type. Ash has already passed the Grand Trial, yet he doesn't seem to have any intention of leaving Melemele Island or even continuing the Island Challenge. I'm well aware that Pokemon has had countless filler episodes, but nearly this entire season has been filler. Ash doesn't seem to have any clear goal. Pokemon has always been about going on a journey to be the very best trainer while seeing all there is to see in the region, but Ash is staying in one place and not going on a journey. Yes there has been some sort of character development in many of Sun & Moon's episodes, but you can't say that this isn't a let-down compared to the previous season.

He's not there because he needs to be but because he liked it and wanted to stay.
From Serebii.net:
"...features Ash meeting the Akala Island Kahuna, Olivia when they go to Akala Island. The final episode has Ash & Co. hunting for treasure with some Stoutland on Akala Island"
Episode 973: Lillie, Take Good Care of Pikachu
Episode 974: Enter Olivia! Cry and Laugh, Island Queen!!
Episode 975: We Found a Treasure! Stoutland Search!!

Personally I like the fact that Sun and Moon is breaking the typical formula that the anime has been relying on for two decades now.
And given the fit people threw when Ash lost the Kalos League, after all that work and the Greninja Battle Bond. I'm fine with this setup for now.

Anon8, isn't Ash's goal to be a Pokemon master? How is he going to become one if he stays there forever? And Anon9, it's breaking the formula that the games have used since the beginning as well. Every core series Pokemon game has had the protagonist travel the region. This formula doesn't only apply to the anime. And "for now", you say? But what if this lasts an entire season? What if Ash NEVER leaves Melemele Island? He hasn't really said that he wants to continue the Island Challenge. What's the point of an Alola saga if it doesn't show the main character attempting to conquer the Island Challenge? I'm concerned that this will ruin a once great anime.
