Part of me wants to watch the pokemon anime.... but I quit watching it around Johto. Catching up would be impossible at this point.

That's one of the things I like about the Pokemon anime sort of resetting after every series, you don't really need to catch up with the whole franchise, just whatever series is on at the time.

Only things you really need to know is who he traveled with and what Pokemon he caught, and that takes about 10-15 minutes on Bulbapedia.
