XY Ash was still a brilliant battler and cared for his friends and Pokemon, which can be seen when he put his gym battle aside for the Master Class and talked with Serena about her future. He also went through a phase of depression where we actually saw character development and glimpses of his past.

SM Ash doesn't give a shit about his friends, he tried to leave Lillie alone to deal with Snowy and only helped when Mallow pulled him in to help. He then proceeded to lie and cheat to impress his mom rather than doing his assignment honestly.

SM Ash doesn't give a shit about his friends, he helped Kiawe on his farm and with his mail route, He searched for an ingredient in a forest for Mallow, He got a Charjabug for Sophocles to catch. He trusted Lillie with his Pikachu for a while. Yep, he does not care about his friends at all!

He only helped Kiawe and Sophocles because he wanted ice cream at first. If he had conscious decision from the start, he would've blown them off the way he did to Lillie. Mallow seems like the only friend he actually cares about.

Ash got a Charjabug for Sophocles as a farewell present not for ice cream. Lillie specifically decided to walk with Vulpix instead of taking her limo, she didn't ask anyone to come with her. In that same episode He caught her and Vulpix as they were falling. He also tried to help her with her poke-phobia at her house.
