Tip: Australia was the prison island of england so a lot of the non native australians are english. Hence the british flag in the australian flag.

It was probably supposed to be the White Ensign of the RN, which would have a big red cross instead of the stars of the commonwealth and southern cross. Note it only came in in 1967.
