I sometimes question the practicality of face masks. With how tightly the material is tied to girl's faces these days it's any wonder how they are able to talk or breathe at all. From thumbnails the line between "face_mask" and "gag" are awfully blurred at times.

It's a little more complicated than that. Face masks can serve a number of practical purposes. They serve to obscure the assailant's face protecting their identity, filter out poisonous gas and certain chemical weapons so that the wearer does not breathe them in, if made of a dense material it can serve as added face armor, and frankly I just think face masks look cool.
As for your "gag" comparison, if the wearer can breathe through the mask it's safe to say they can also speak through it with limited resistance. And even if the face masks are the thick and metallic kind there are usually networked comms systems installed in the masks which actually allow for BETTER communication between team members, not worse.
