While it may be a running gag of sorts, the fact the student is all but a carbon copy of the teacher, I don't think this is a case of adoption. First off, Gai was the son of Dai, with both being of the clan Maito. Rock Lee, despite being a physical as well as behavioral copy of Gai, was not his son and was an unspoken adopted kid of his. Rock Lee must be the father of Metal Lee since the two are physically alike and have the same clan name.

It could be a running gag, but I don't think so. Not in the way of unrelatedness anwyay.
