I have the toy where he has the jet engines on his sides. I could never figure out why they turned into animals when there were no humans to hide from. If megatron got seen as a t-rex, then everyone would know it was megatron.

^I think it had to do with Energon and it being hazardous to their robot forms, yet for some reason it has no effect on them in animal form.

The beast forms work as organic sheaths, as energon doesn't corrupt organics. Same reason it doesn't hurt the creatures on "that planet".

Ok, spurious logic at best but at least they made up some kinda justification.

The toy was transmetal Megatron. (the upgraded form of this one with roller skates and the drill tail). He jumps from that to dragon.

The beast modes were kind of like 'energon insulators' really, kind of like how rubber can block electricity or lead radiation.

As for why he picked a T-rex, well if you were going to turn into an animal, wouldn't you want it to be the most badass one you could find?

What I never understood was why he was PURPLE. Did he scan Barney's prehistoric ancestor or something?

^ Well, if you paid attention to the 1st episode of Beast Wars, you'd see that Megatron already had purple and black as his main colors. So it figures that his beast form would follow suit.

BTW, he looks really badass in this drawing.
