The only reason I-168 was even in position to attack Yorktown was because they missed the order to retreat and stayed behind at Midway. They also didn't realize Yorktown had already been repaired once after Hiryu's air attack so they mistakenly reported they'd sunk a different carrier, leading the Japanese high command to believe they'd sunk two when they'd only actually sunk one.
