It's not an "axe" it's a Halberd.

Actually, a halberd IS an axe. What she's carrying isn't even a proper halberd, anyway. A halberd is a polearm with an elongated spear head at the tip, an axe head and a back-swept hook just below the spear head. The small axe head is supposed to be a back-swept hook.

Also, those pauldrons are useless. Their length would interfere with any large weapon. Especially a polearm.

If anything, what she's carrying is just a double bladed Dane axe; you /could/ call it a poleaxe by virtue of it being an axe on a long pole, but a poleaxe is an entirely different beast (a poleaxe has an axe blade, long stabbing spike, and a hammer opposite the axe).

And yes, those pauldrons are useless; the only weapon I could see it working for is some variation of single-handed sword and then only worn on the non-dominant shoulder, in which case its length would act similar to a Roman manica (an arm-guard that extended from shoulder to wrist made of segmented strips of metal similar to the more famous lorica segmentata; in fact, the two were occasionally used in conjunction).

The only way to make those things functional would be to cut them off right where the gilding is fanciest so they could actually do their job without getting in the way. If you're that worried about protecting your upper arms, get a pair of rerebraces.
