Just out of curiosity...do we KNOW that this is "two girls", especially when there's no source tag? Take into consideration the fashions of 16th and 17th Century France, where men wore tights, frills, and wore bows to tie their hair with.

Though the angle is somewhat off, one could say the kneeling figure is female due to the lack of an adams' apple.
For a similar reason I'm inclined to think the one in the dress is wearing a choker to hide such a noticable anatomical quality. Which would further imply this is both a trap and a reverse trap.
