It's like asking why Link has brown or purple hair in the earlier Legend of Zelda games. Designs change over time. Hell, Mario originally wore red overalls on a blue shirt when he was first introduced. Though for Super Mario Bros NES, he wore red on brown.

It is what it is though. I had to look up what Mario looked like in Donkey Kong for the Atari just to make the point, so I'm just a hypocrite at that point.
