Think a few rather famous people actually played the guitar upside down, backwards, sideways, every which way imaginable. In the case of those who played them upside down, some had different handedness and so had the instruments strung the other way, or some such, so while it "looks" wrong the configuration turns out to be "right" for their specific circumstances... Hendrix played behind his head on at least one occasion.
When it comes to doing some things, sometimes there is no "right" or "wrong" way to do it; you just learn to do it whichever way happens to work for you. That generally happens with people who are self-taught, who just picked something up and went for it rather than seeking out any sort of instruction. Of course, if they then had some sort of instruction, sure, they might improve by changing how they do things---but they might also be so far along that re-learning the "right" way would not be worth the time and effort.
